Risk disclosure

This is the first and most important section of this page. Read it slowly. If anything below is unclear, write to us and we will explain in person.

Investing involves risk. You can lose money, including more than you originally put in if you use leveraged products. Past performance, including any performance shown in our marketing material or journal essays, is not a reliable indicator of what will happen in the future.

Aureus is a piece of software that places trades on your behalf in financial markets. Financial markets move in ways that no system can fully anticipate. The system we have built is designed to manage risk carefully, but no system, ours included, can eliminate risk. There are scenarios in which losses can be large, can happen quickly, and can occur even when every rule has been followed correctly.

Specific risks to be aware of

Market risk. The general movement of markets against your positions. This is the most common form of loss.
Liquidity risk. In some market conditions, it may not be possible to close a position at the price the system expected. This can result in losses larger than the calculated stop.
Execution risk. The price at which a trade is filled may differ from the price at which it was triggered, particularly during volatile periods.
Counterparty risk. Your funds sit with a broker. The protections available to you depend on that broker, its regulator, and the relevant compensation schemes.
Software risk. Our software is built carefully, but software can fail. We have systems in place to detect and respond to failures, but no software is perfect.

What Aureus is

Aureus Investment Solutions Ltd is a UK-registered company, based in Devon, that provides a piece of trading software. We are a software provider. We are not, and we are explicit about this:

Not a fund or fund manager.
Not a broker or dealer.
Not a financial advisor.
Not a custodian of client funds.

Your money sits in a brokerage account opened in your name with a third-party broker. We never hold, receive, or have the ability to withdraw your funds. The trading authorisation we operate under permits us to place trades on your behalf and nothing more.

Regulatory positioning

Because we operate as a software provider rather than a fund manager or advisor, our activities fall outside the scope of the financial services regulatory regimes that govern those activities in the UK. We have taken this position deliberately and with legal counsel.

The broker through whom you trade will be regulated in their own jurisdiction. The protections available to you in the event of a broker failure depend on that broker and its regulator. We recommend you read your broker's disclosures carefully before opening an account.

Privacy in brief

We collect the minimum amount of information needed to run the service. Your name, your email address, the trading parameters you have set, and a record of the trades the system has placed on your behalf. We do not share any of this with third parties for marketing purposes, and we do not sell data.

A full privacy policy will be published before the product is available to the public. If you have specific questions before then, please write to us.

Terms of service

A full set of terms will be published before the product is available to the public. The headline principles, which the final terms will reflect, are these:

You can disconnect the software at any time, from inside your brokerage account, without going through us.
We do not lock subscriptions into contracts of more than one month at a time.
We do not charge performance fees of any kind.
If we make material changes to the strategy, we will tell you in advance.
If we cease to operate, your account and your funds remain with your broker.
